Barnstable County comprises the southeastern most area of Massachusetts, also known as Cape Cod, which is separated from the rest of the state by a deep canal, built in 1916. Two auto bridges connect Cape Cod to the rest of the state. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,306 square miles (3,382 km²), of which, 396 square miles (1,024 km²) of it is land and 910 square miles (2,357 km²) of it (69.71%) is water. Barnstable County borders Plymouth County to the northwest; off Barnstable County’s southern shore are Dukes County and Nantucket.
