July 12, 2009 – Alexander C. Howe, 29, of Ipswich, Massachusetts, is in serious condition after a single car accident in that town early Thursday morning. Howe was ejected from his 1996 Volkswagen sedan, after leaving the road and crashing into a tree, according to police reports. The car then struck a parked truck and crashed into a garage. Local police continue to investigate the accident.

According to police, Howe was not wearing a seatbelt and was speeding at the time of the crash. He was unconscious when first responders arrived at the scene and was taken by ambulance to Beverly Hospital. Thereafter, he was transported to Beth Israel for further treatment and apparently remains in critical condition.

In the last two weeks there have been not less than four motor vehicle accidents in which occupants suffered life threatening injuries or death as the result of ejections, which inevitably are the result of a choice not to utilize seatbelts. The statistics are overwhelming about the increased risks associated with accidents, where it is reported that seatbelts, mandatory in Massachusetts and most other states, are not used.

July 10, 2009 – Michele Veneziano, 85, of Lynn, Massachusetts, has been charged with driving to endanger and leaving the scene of an accident after hitting a parked car in Revere, Massachusetts and then hitting a man who was exiting his parked vehicle. The injured man was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of serious personal injuries. Veneziano does not appear to have been injured in the crash.

This accident comes on the same day that 88 year old, Ilse Horn, was indicted on one count of negligent homicide. She is woman who struck and killed 4 year old Diya Patel in a crosswalk in Stoughton, Massachusetts several weeks ago. She could face a maximum sentence of 2 ½ years in the House of Correction if found guilty.

The Massachusetts legislature continues to debate new rules pertaining to the testing of elderly drivers, thus far without taking any action. was charged with  was cited for negligent operation and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.

July 6, 2009 – Jason Wayne Spurlin, 31, of Lakeworth, Florida, today was charged with vehicular homicide, operating to endanger and felony OUI, speeding and crossing lanes as the result of a car accident early Sunday morning. He was arraigned from his hospital bed and bail was set at $75,000.00. Spurlin has a history of driving offenses, including a prior OUI in Florida.

Spurlin was the operator of a car, which crashed in the early morning hours yesterday in Walpole, Massachusetts, killing 3 passengers in a single car accident. He survived with serious injuries. Nick Kelly and Anna Dubois, both 20, of Walpole, and Amanda Murray, 23, of Medfield, were killed in the crash.

Walpole Police said Spurlin was intoxicated and speeding when he couldn’t negotiate a turn at the corner of East Street and High Street at around 1 a.m. He was driving a 1998 Jeep Cherokee, which went off the road and slammed into a tree. He has now been charged with vehicular homicide and

July 7, 2009 – Gleidson Pereira, 23, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, was the operator of a motor vehicle, which crashed. Pereira has died as the result of the single car accident on I-95 North in Attleboro, Massachusetts early Sunday morning. Two passengers, Ivanildo De Sousa, 27, and Lavdeir De Silva, 29, also from Plymouth, both died as well. Another passenger, Samuel Troy-Mendes, 29, also of Plymouth, suffered serious pesonal injuries and was treated at Rhode Island Hospital.

Pereira apparently lost control of the car near Exit 3 at about 2:43 a.m. The car rolled and struck several tree stumps before coming to rest, according to the Massachusetts State Police. None of the occupants was wearing a seat belt , and all four were ejected from the vehicle. The Massachusetts state police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the accident and to date, no one has been charged.

The victims were among eight deaths as the result of motor vehicle accidents this weekend in eastern Massachusetts. Three others died, also in a single car crash in the early morning in Walpole, Massachusetts leaving one survivor. Another man died in Quincy and an eighth in Sudbury last evening.

July 4, 2009 – Jacqueline Sorensen, age 83, crashed her car through the storefront window of a Natick, Massachusetts liquor store yesterday. The Ford Mustang convertible hit the checkout counter and struck the cashier, apparently only causing the female worker only minor personal injuries. Natick police investigated the car accident, have charged Sornesen with Operating to Endanger and have suspended her operator’s license, calling her an immediate threat.

According to Natick Police, the car crashed into Fannon’s Liquor Store on North Main Street at about 10:40 a.m. The driver was taken to the hospital, suffering from chest pain. Apparently, she had no recollection of what had happened. Her car had a handicapped placard.

The cashier, Debra Blenkhorn, 51, has worked at the store for 13 years. She was also taken to the hospital with arm and neck pain. Apparently, she had been pinned between the counter and a shelf full of liquor bottles.

July 2, 2009 – Zachary Rofino, an 11 year old from North Attleboro, Massachusetts, suffered personal injuries in a car accident when he was pinned between two cars at a mall parking lot on Monday. Dominick Perry, 85, of Seekonk, was backing his car up in the parking lot of the Emerald Square Mall in Attleboro when he struck Rofino. The boy was pinned between Perry’s car and his mother’s sport utility vehicle. According to police, Perry claims he did not see Rofino until he heard the child screaming in pain.

Rofino was treated and released from the Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. Before he was hit, Rofino was helping his mother unload a stroller from the back of her car.

Perry has been charged with driving to endanger and had his licensed revoked by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. According to the Registry, Perry had no prior incidents in his driving history.

July 1, 2009 – Katherine Casey, 84, of Malden,Massachusetts, has died as the result of personal injuries sustained in a car accident in which her husband, Joseph Casey, 83, was the driver. It appears that he was responsible for the accident, which occurred in Woburn, Massachusetts yesterday afternoon. The second car was also driven by an older 78 year old woman. The woman was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She has not yet been identified.

Mr. Casey will be charged in the crash and his license has been revoked by the RMV, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney. Casey has a recent history of driving woes, including a surchargeable accident in 2004, which resulted in a license suspension. Casey then took driver rehabilitiation courses and obtained a medical clearance, which eventually resulted in the reinstatement of his license to operate. However, he had another accident in 2005, which did not result in a new suspension.

The crash yesterday occurred at the intersection of Old Cambridge Road and Russell Street. The elderly man was driving a Toyota Camry and was with his 84-year-old wife when he struck a Chrysler Sebring driven by an unidentified 78-year-old Woburn woman. The Malden couple was taken to the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, where Mrs. Casey later died from her injuries.

June 30, 2009 – Francis Blomerth, 84 years old from Medford, Massachusetts suffered  serious personal injuries in a car accident while he was crossing Main Street as a pedestrian in downtown Melrose Sunday morning. Blomerth was hit by a car driven by 86 year old Virginia Nelson, of Malden. Blomerth remains in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles has revoked Nelson’s operator’s license, but has yet to cite her for any violations related to the accident. According to the Registry, Nelson has a clean driving record, but nonetheless revoked her license in reliance on the official report from the accident.

Both the Melrose Police and the Massachusetts State Police are investigating the accident.  However, Blomerth appeared to be in a crosswalk when he was struck and there were no skid marks at the point of impact.

July 9, 2009 – Cassandra Flynn, a 21 year old Bourne woman, has a died as a result of personal injuries sustained in a one car accident in Bourne, Massachsuetts on June 29th. The 1984 Porsche 944 slammed into a tree on County Road, in Pocasset. Three other passengers, including the driver, Jonathan Muir, were injured and initially treated at local hospitals.

Flynn’s friend, Erica Pouler, had turned 21 at midnight and the group apparently went out to celebrate at a local restaurant. The fourth passenger was Sonya Dangelo, of Bourne. The driver, Jonathan Muir, 21 years old and residing in Falmouth appears to have lost control of the vehicle on a curve and crashed into a tree.

Muir has been charged with motor vehicle homicide, two counts of causing serious bodily injury while under the influence of alcohol, driving so as to endanger, failure to stay within marked lanes, and speeding.

June 26, 2009: Joanna Soucy, a 33 year old from Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, died as the result of serious personal injuries when her minivan rolled over in the median on Route I-495 northbound in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. The accident occurred Thursday night at around 10:30 p.m.

Police say that Soucy was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the automobile. Soucy was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
